Album reviews Music

Nautilus

Rating: NNN

Nautilus are a local trio who describe their sound as “improvised organic breaks.” This album is a live recording of their improvisations, which are less rooted in dance music than that description suggests. They do use some effects here and there to add an electronic feel, but for the most part the guitar and bass are clean and natural-sounding, reminiscent of 70s jazz-rock fusion but with sparser arrangements and a drummer who clearly listens to a lot of drum ‘n’ bass. It’s a bit aimless, and the drums should be much louder, but the band is original-sounding and a pleasant listen overall.

Nautilus perform Friday (January 21) at Gypsy Co-op (815 Queen West).
