Casting some tasty morsels to those jonesing for a follow-up to 2002's phenomenal Blacklisted, enterprising alt-country siren Neko Case's The Tigers Have Spoken goes way beyond your average live best-of comp. Drawn from shows backed by the Sadies in Chicago and Toronto, Tigers includes a selection of past faves, covers and new tunes written specifically for the album - opener If You Knew is top-notch. Case defies expectations with smart song choices that prove she's more than a country torch singer, ranging from the Shangri-Las' Train From Kansas City to trad gospel and Buffy Sainte-Marie tunes. Sure, her take on the Nervous Eaters' Loretta - presumably tossed in to prove she's still got punk cred - pales in comparison to both the original and the Lazy Cowgirls' version, but the fidelity of Tigers is crystal-clear and captures Case at her best.
