Since New West typically releases separate CD versions of its Live From Austin, TX concert DVDs simultaneously, it was strange that the street date of the Neko Case CD was pushed back to January 16. But after seeing her exceptional Austin City Limits performance from 2003 captured on the DVD, the deferred street date of the CD makes more sense - this stellar live disc would've obliterated holiday-season sales of her Fox Confessor Brings The Flood album. Not only does Live From Austin, TX serve nicely as a surrogate Neko Case best-of collection, but it also comes bolstered with her masterful interpretations of well-chosen covers (Bob Dylan, Hank Williams and Sook-Yin Lee) unavailable elsewhere. Case is in remarkably fine voice here, while the spare accompaniment tastefully supplied by upright bassist Tom V. Ray and Jon Rauhouse on steel guitar and banjo gives her room to soar unfettered by the security blanket of reverb to which she clings on studio sessions. Neko will never sound like this again.
