New Order

Rating: NNN

Now that New Order have their sound so well defined – it’s all about Peter Hook’s bass riffs and Bernie Sumner’s mournful drawl – they can apply it to any stylistic concept, sing whatever they want and wind up with something that’s still unmistakably New Order. They may have realized that fact years ago, but it’s taken them until Waiting For The Sirens’ Call to have some fun with it. That’s why you get Sumner bleating nonsense about Dracula’s castle and jet-stream lovers along with kooky stabs at Yardie-style Velvet Underground jams and boldface Stooges rips – they’re just seeing what they can get away with. Not a classic New Order album, but an entertaining lark nonetheless.
