It's depressing enough we're now walking around with umbrellas and sweaters. Now local songwriter Nick Zubeck comes along with a breezy palm tree record that's probably about 60 days behind its due date.
From the California jazz pop sway of Steely Dan in Dreamer Of Dreams to the acoustic glide in Cherry Sunshine, there's unabashed summery warmth to Zubeck's third release, which he put down on tape in July 07. Co-produced by Sandro Perri, who adds some dizzying echoplex to Sunshine, Tracker was recorded by Jeremy Darby, whose credits include heavyweights John Cale, Lou Reed and Bowie - quite a coup for Zubeck.
Tracker isn't going to vault him up with those names, but it certainly makes a bright sidearm as we creep into the darkest of seasons.
Nick Zubeck launches Tracker at the Tranzac tonight (Thursday, September 18).
