Album reviews Music

Nickodemus

Rating: NNN

Skittering snares and lilting vocal harmonies drift through the title track, setting the tone for the rest of the ride. You might have heard Mi Swing Es Tropical, a simple, honey-sweet Latin reggae-lite number, in a recent iTunes commercial, but it’s even better here.

This diverse Afro-Cuban collection of dance-floor igniters makes only the occasional misstep. The powerful Back From Africa, with a sharp seven-minute excursion into meditative djembe vibrations, evokes Quincy Jones and MJ’s Wanna Be Starting Something. Thievery Corporation resurface to contribute a moody but funky jam called Crazy Stranger. It’s good that these producers are open to using most genres as reference points, but Apani B’s slightly arrythmic rap throws the end of the disc off.
