Montreal’s Nightwood are capable of writing a cool post-?punk guitar lick, but their best material is spread a little thin on Big City. Sounding at times like a less ?urgent Sleater Kinney (complete with all-?girl vocal harmonies), their biggest challenge is keeping things interesting.
Too often, one or two quality ideas are surrounded by a less ?than ?engaging song – the very end of The Hunger and the bridge of Cave Of The Spleen are good examples of this (as well as good examples of bad song titles). For Nightwood to really succeed, they need to be more Joy Division and less Joydrop.
Nightwood play Rancho Relaxo tonight (Thursday, May 22).
