The great success of the original Will The Circle Be Unbroken project involved connecting the elderly traditionalist Nashville outsiders with the young long-haired ones from California, proving that the timeless beauty of American roots music had not diminished. The third instalment is more like a nostagia trip that calls on surviving participants -- namely Jimmy Martin and Doc Watson -- to try to recapture the old magic. Sadly, of course, they can't. A few crossover celebs like Alison Krauss and Vince Gill are brought in to boost sales, but they're all upstaged by Iris DeMent. A better idea would've been to put upstarts like the Tarbox Ramblers, the Gourds, the Dickel Brothers and the Backstabbers in a room with fellow mavericks Hazel Dickens, Mike Seeger and Chris Hillman to see what would happen. Maybe Volume IV.
