NO DEPRESSION What It Sounds Like, Vol. 1 (Dualtone) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Now that the alt-country trend has effectively gone the way of electroclash, the braintrust behind No Depression magazine have decided it’s time to release an alt-country primer disc. What It Sounds Like – optimistically designated Vol. 1 – collects previously released tunes by Whiskeytown (Faithless Street), Alejandro Escovedo (Five Hearts Breaking), Doug Sahm (Cowboy Peyton Place), Neko Case (Thrice All American) and others focusing on stuff subscribers likely already own. The fact that the best songs here were cut during the mid-90s height of the alt-country scare should be a sign to the No Depression editors that it might be time to consider contingency plans.
