No Luck Club

Rating: NNN

This is fun – a sampling/production/ turntablism showcase courtesy of Vancouver’s Chan brothers. Cleverly, each track is based on a theme (wine, crime, love, communism), and each theme is adhered to by using and layering appropriate musical samples and placing dusty old men and 60s women on records hysterically out of context. In terms of maintaining listeners’ interest, the pacing is perfect and the samples point to years of intensive digging. The comparison to Kid Koala is a bit off – Koala’s music less typical, less regimented and more abstract than the Chans’, whom I’d place nearer to the Fatboy Slim realm.
