NOISETTES

Rating: NNN

Noisettes are a buzzy Brit three-piece led by the confounding presence of Shingai Shoniwa, a feral singer who swings fluidly between the intimidating wails of Grace Jones and a seductive Gwen Stefani coo. Her personality’s so huge on this debut full-length that you kinda feel sorry for the two dudes on her flank (guitarist Dan Smith and drummer Jamie Morrison, for the record). They’re pounding out Yeah Yeah Yeahs-style guttural rock, most successfully on IWE and the wonderfully named Bridge To Canada. But Shoniwa’s voice is on almost every inch of tape, and with her live presence quickly becoming the band’s calling card, it’s hard to imagine this as anything other than her vehicle, which she’ll likely abandon at the side of the road before long.
