For their sophomore album, Cody and Luther Dickinson have hired their dad, Jim Dickinson, as producer, which is a brilliant move, and then tried to demonstrate how they’ve matured as songwriters, which isn’t. Once they get through the two terrific dirty boogie bashes that get 51 Phantom off to a rousing start, it’s mostly downhill, with misguided stabs at gospel and the sort of bland ballads that make it seem like they’re angling for adult contemporary radio play. What a mistake.
