Northey Valenzuela

Rating: NNN

The name Northey Valenzuela may sound like it belongs to a Latino pitching prospect, but it’s actually the songwriting project of the Odds’ Craig Northey and his pal Jesse Valenzuela from the Gin Blossoms. They’re the dudes behind Not A Lot Goin’ On, the catchy theme to the popular CTV sitcom Corner Gas. Good to see they had the sense to flesh out the jingle into a real song for their snappy self-titled debut, backed by Northey’s ex-Odds mates Doug Elliott and Pat Steward, which shows them aiming to be the new Difford & Tilbrook. They’ve come up with a surprisingly soulful version of Something Good – an improvement on Colin James’s version – but there’s nothing too daring or profound here, just well-crafted adult pop delivered with single-take verve.
