NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN & PARTY Body And Soul (Real World) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
Quickly becoming the Tupac of global music, qawwali king Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has a catalogue that continues to grow five years after his death via an ongoing series of posthumous, "last session ever" albums. Like the helpfully titled discs Final Moment and Final Studio Recordings, Body And Soul was recorded in Pakistan just before Nusrat's death in 1997 and was later mixed at the Real World studios. Any Nusrat record is bound to have its moments, but the problem with these posthumous sets is that the singer's health was in serious decline in the last years of his life. So while you get occasional spine-tingling glimpses of Nusrat's gloriously elastic voice here, the most dramatic moments come courtesy of backup qawwal Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan. Stick with the classics, or anything recorded pre-1996.
