Ocean’s Twelve

Rating: NNNN

Since the funky score David Holmes provided for Stephen Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven update worked so well, it makes sense that they’d reunite, along with the cast, for Ocean’s Twelve. The European settings allow Holmes to broaden his scope, bolstering his Lalo Schifrin-inspired score with vintage grooves from soundtrack ringers like Piero Umiliani, Dave Grusin and John Schroeder that he seamlessly mixes together like a DJ set. Holmes is resourceful enough to come up with genuine obscurities by Dynastie Crisis, and musically adept enough to reshape existing material to suit his needs, as on What R We Stealing, which clearly echoes Ennio Morricone’s Svolta Definitiva from Città Violenta. Cheeky bastard.
