Ocote Soul Sounds

Rating: NNNN

Ocote Soul Sounds are the brainchild of Antibalas’ Martín Perna and Grupo Fantasma’s Adrian Quesada, and their third album offers Afrobeat with a surprising twist. Fused with jazz, funk, soul and pop, the songs are danceable, catchy, funky and a pleasant change from, well, everything else out there right now.

The songs have an infectious groove and emotional range. The ones sung in English tell strange tales of vampire-catching and freaks returning to town, while the Spanish ones are more beautiful and peaceful. Not every song will work for everybody, but there’s definitely something here for all.

Top track: El Diablo Y El Ñau Ñau

Ocote Soul Sounds play Kool Haus Friday (October 23).
