Old Time Relijun

Named for the year the Mayan calendar abruptly ends, Old Time Relijun’s 2012 is suitably apocalyptic. Building on the throbbing rhythms of drums and upright bass, singer Arrington DeDionyso’s trio of voodoo priests pour the blues all over you. Dissonant guitar strikes collide with squawking sax in controlled cacophony. DeDionyso’s growling, yelping and wailing and occasional throat-singing evoke a sexual, sinister underworld full of abandoned buildings, predators in the forest and fantastical interspecies creatures. But when it comes down, this is dance music that’ll creep you out while it makes you move.
