When the snarling guitar distortion kicked in, I had to check to make sure it indeed was the new Cowboy Junkies disc. While they’re not out of the doldrums, the Junkies have discovered how playing with dynamics, sonic textures and rhythmic shifts can be used to their advantage if they insist on maintaining a consistent tone and tempo. So at least Open creates the impression of being more exciting than a typical Cowboy Junkies album, and that’s a giant step forward.
