When the horrible Katrina disaster hit New Orleans, there was never really any doubt that the Crescent City’s resilient musicians would band together for what was sure to be an amazing charitable relief album. Well, Our New Orleans 2005 (net proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity), with stellar performances from Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Eddie Bo, the Wild Magnolias, Buckwheat Zydeco, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, BeauSoleil and others, doesn’t disappoint. This isn’t some corny collection of previously released recordings or outtakes, but rather a series of spirit-raising testimonials of hard times and personal triumph, performed with heartfelt passion by musicians who know New Orleans best. It’s capped by a stirring Randy Newman performance of Louisiana 1927 backed by the Lousiana Philharmonic. One of the rare benefit discs that you’ll want for the music.
