OZ: THE SOUNDTRACK

Rating: NNNNN

Getting a bunch of thug MCs to provide the soundtrack for the gritty prison series OZ might seem like a no-brainer, but then again, nothing’s straightforward when you’re just trying to make a fast buck.

Sure, the hiphop crews gathered here can all rhyme about being locked down, and many of the cast-off tracks sound just like the exaggerated gangster fantasies that Trick Daddy, Master P and Kurupt normally deal in. Snoop Dogg famously avoided prison time, while the three members of Wu-Tang Clan who appear on What You In Fo’ are the only ones in the group who haven’t been in the joint. There is no mention of the actual experience of being in prison, though — just a lot of shout-outs to pals locked down and yelling about jailhouse retribution. Needless to say, intelligent cuts by Mos Def or Dead Presidents about, say, prison statistics in America, need ot apply.
