PABLO DISCOBAR

Rating: NNNNN

Eight Australians dressed like the dudes in Reservoir Dogs, playing soul/funk and calling themselves Pablo Discobar? This should be way worse than it is.

The octet, led by a G. Love-sounding Julian Feldman and guitarist Arik Blum, aren’t the true torchbearers of soul, funk or R&B, but rather a weekend-in-Melbourne party band whose simple and sincere ambition is to get a crowd shaking.

There’s a pretty routine mix of organ shuffle, blues riffs, funky brass and handclaps on The Only Thing EP, but with the right combination of alcohol, audience and dance floor, Pablo Discobar could be a viable stop on your NXNE odyssey.

Pablo Discobar get busy at Crosstown tonight (Thursday, June 7) at 10 pm.
