Kesto loosely translates as “duration,” which is appropriate for a four-disc, four-hour album of electronic minimalism. Finland’s Pan Sonic are as noisy as ever, and there’s still nothing resembling a traditional song here, but the four movements are surprisingly engaging, with long sections of finely detailed drones, some almost funky computer dub and bursts of violent cacophony. Unlike other artists dumped into the IDM category, Pan Sonic wisely avoid resorting to over-processing and unnecessary layers – there’s a stark rawness here that highlights how strong this “music” is. Definitely not for everyone, but there’s something worthwhile here for those interested in the outer edges of electronic music.
