Album reviews Music

Panurge

Rating: NNN

Built around a combined love of 60s-era British harmonies, melodic sensibilities and New World studio trickery, this near-perfect summer frolic album comes from Vancouver’s Panurge. A bit thin on the lyrical side (it’s often more mantra than song), musically it has all the quirky inspiration of XTC working a Madchester sensibility. These jubilant dance-pop anthems verge on greatness. If only they’d been able to muster up Andy Partridge’s lyrical sagacity and not just his studio instincts.
