Party Fun Action Committee Let’s Get Serious (Def Jux) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

The heavy-duty soundscapes and lyrics dropped by most “jukies” are reversed on this comedy album, which pokes fun at various post-Y2K rap archetypes. The slam poetry parody Word Up? by Andrew Q and the Free Jazz Crusaders is hilarious, and so are Flohamed Ali’s and Ja Mello’s Nelly/Ja Rule burn Be My Lady and MC Noel Weissman’s Chapstick, a takeoff on MC Paul Barman. The brains behind this project are Blockhead (best known as Aesop Rock’s beatmaker) and Jeremy Gibson, whose knowledge of rap shows in their choice of targets. Worth checking out, since hiphop comedy is rare – and besides, it’s funny.
