PATTI SMITH Land 1975-2002 (Arista/BMG) Rating: NNNNN Rating: NNNNN
To fulfill her contractual obligation to Arista, Patti Smith had to provide the label with a greatest-hits collection before being turned loose. But since Because The Night was her only chart action, Smith made Land into a favourites selection chosen by fans and friends, with an additional disc of demos and live recordings of otherwise unavailable songs. The best-of portion is weighted slightly toward the Easter era, yet it's still a well-balanced sampling of the Patti Smith Group's studio peaks, with an intriguing Patti-ized reading of Prince's When Doves Cry. The real delight, however, is the work-in-progress disc, where we get a glimpse of Smith's creative process, revealing an adventurous spirit that remains vital to this day.
