Pernice Brothers

Apparently, Pernice Brothers singer/songwriter Joe Pernice has been a Toronto resident for some time now, though it’d be an understatement to say he’s been living on the down-low – there have actually been more Prince sightings in town. From the group’s publicity shot, which has him smiling from behind a witness protection program beard, it seems the change of locale has been good for Pernice, which comes across in the positive, more upbeat feel of Discover A Lovelier You. At times he reverts to his signature sad whisper, but even when dealing with darker themes, there’s an underlying optimism at work. This accounts for the album’s appeal in spite of the often awkward stylistic twists. Although it’s clearly a transitional work, it sounds like Pernice is on the right track.

The Pernice Brothers sneak into Lee’s Palace Monday (July 18). Shh!
