Life is good for Pete Seeger. The folk legend turned 87 last month, and, thanks to one famous musician, kids everywhere are discovering his old-school country tunes. In May, Bruce Springsteen brought Seeger back to the mainstream, covering 13 of his more memorable hits. Now, on this reissue of American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 4 (first published in 1961), Seeger newbies and old fans alike can listen to the man himself. With 28 tracks, including The Foggy Dew, You Are My Sunshine and Go Down, Moses, this compilation is a smorgasbord of excellent summer porch music. Unlike Springsteen's interpretations, which were layered with various instruments, this is Seeger solo, just plucking his banjo and showing off his quivering voice. As well as the Boss did at capturing Seeger's sound, nothing compares with the originals.
