From a commercial perspective, it’s probably a good idea that Peter Morén of Swedish one-hit wonders Peter Björn and John has released his solo debut now, while people still remember he was the dude singing Young Folks.
The Last Tycoon has a charming homemade feel. Morén knows what makes a pop song work, but he could have put a little more effort into transforming the rambling, Dylanesque folk strums into more fully realized songs that express his ideas more clearly. He could’ve used Björn Yttling’s editing skills. Jose Gonzalez fans may be enamoured of the sad-eyed sensitivity of it all, but those anticipating chiming pop thrills will be disappointed by Morén’s oblique, demo-quality downer jive.
Peter Morén joins Tobias Froberg at the El Mocambo tonight (Thursday, April 24).
