PETRA HADEN & Bill Frisell (Songline/ True North) Rating: NN
He's ostensibly a jazz guitarist, but Bill Frisell's always had a pop streak, in the past bridging the gap between John Zorn and Madonna. Still, it's hard to figure out what he's getting at in this collaboration with former that dog vocalist Petra Haden. A stripped-down collection of covers that would have been better suited to a late-night living room jam than a proper disc, the dozen songs here are so casual, the selection so uninspired that you have to wonder if Frisell's taking the piss. At best it's karaoke, with Haden mewling her way through Coldplay's Yellow, When You Wish Upon A Star, John Hardy and some Tuvan throat singing over Frisell's lazy strumming. At worst it's just plain embarrassing. A week at the Airport Hilton lounge beckons.
