PHH!K

Rating: NNN

Phh!k are primarily known as an electronic duo who are part of the academic side of experimental music. For this recording, they’re joined by vocalist Christine Duncan and percussionist Rick Sacks. They’ve also included a quadrasonic mix of the audio on DVD, which is kind of an obscure option. Then again, they’re a pretty obscure outfit. I sorta hated Songs the first few times I listened to it, but it grew on me after a while. The trick is to imagine them as goofy nerds having fun and not take it too seriously. Phh!k have what some might call a populist approach to experimental music, drawing from jazz and pop and borrowing certain elements from DJ culture. The disparate influences mesh better than you’d think, but this still falls into the category of “difficult” music.

Phh!k launch their CD Saturday (April 23) at Arraymusic Studio.
