Pill

4075: The Refill (D5M)

Rating: NNNNN

Ever since he dropped his incendiary video for Trap Goin’ Ham a few months back, Pill has established himself as more than an exploitative rapper. His new mixtape starts with the hard-charging, paranoid romp Hear Somebody Comin’ and keeps things memorable with the anthemic OK Denn, Trap Goin’ Ham and the irrepressibly funky Pain In They Eyes. He then takes a detour to rap over Outkast’s 2 Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac) and Geto Boys’ Mind Playing Tricks On Me.

Only 23 years old, Pill is succinctly articulate, especially when rapping about the darkest things. His spot-on delivery is no doubt a product of Killer Mike’s tutelage, and when he wants it to be, Pill’s music absolutely drips with the bleakness of the streets. 4075 is one of the strongest free releases of the year. Don’t sleep on it.
