It's tragic but inevitable that every so often, through a mixture of hype and overexposure, a band comes up with some huge radio hit whose success can never be reproduced. Remember Pure Morning? Well, Placebo may not be getting as much airplay these days as they got for that song, but that doesn't mean they don't write good music. Brian Molko still manages to carry songs with his affected, nasal delivery as the band provides a steady backbone. The dark, orchestral electro-groove of Space Monkey isn't exactly cutting-edge, but Placebo give it enough character to separate it from the pack, and Michael Stipe's sedated guest vocals on Broken Promise complement Molko's theatrical emoting perfectly. Even though they may not ever be as big as they were eight years ago, it really doesn't matter as long as they remain consistent.
