Po’ Girl

Po’ Girl (Jericho Beach) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Po’ Girl is the bluesy side project of the Be Good Tanyas’ Trish Klein and Vancouver singer/clarinet player Allison Russell, which gives you a pretty good idea of what it sounds like – the Be Good Tanyas’ twangy Americana with a twist of snaky clarinet and a dollop of Delta blues. Considering that Klein has few solo writing credits on the Tanyas’ albums, you kinda get the feeling she was saving her best stuff for Po’ Girl. Their debut disc is classy and understated, featuring a fine interplay between Russell’s smoky vocals and Klein’s girly lilt, deft banjo- and mandolin-pickin’ and rattletrap organic production à la the Tanyas’ Blue Horse. Po’ Girl’s actually pretty rich.

Po’ Girl play the CIBC Stage at Harbourfront Saturday (June 28) at 3:30 pm.
