Porcupine Tree

Rating: NNN

buy this at amazon.ca!

Diehard prog fans (I know you’re out there) might decry Porcupine Tree’s latest offering as mainstream alt-rock, while alt-rock aficionados will probably dismiss it as self-indulgent noodling. This leaves the prickly little dudes in an odd place, though one they’ve surely occupied in the past. From chugging metal guitars to sparse and spacey piano bits and much that is Pink Floydian in between, Deadwing is both and neither of those things. Don’t be put off by the unfortunate title while it does set you up for song titles like Lazarus and Halo, the fact is that this record has lots to offer. Adrian Belew helps out with tunes that feature wildly imaginative structure, infectious melodies and beats and what I hope is a cheeky sense of humour.

Porcupine Tree get progressive at the Mod Club Tuesday (May 24).
