Powderfinger Vulture Street (Universal) Rating: NNN
It's amazing how a song can take on a whole new meaning once you learn what it's actually about. Since You've Been Gone, a roots rock lament, may seem like a plain old love lost song at first listen, but it's actually about the death of guitarist/ vocalist Bernard Fanning's brother, which puts it on a different plane. That'll teach me to assume. Vulture Street is a more direct rock offering from Powderfinger. All straight-ahead and still très post-grunge, it runs the rock gamut (plus a little folk), evoking everyone in riff and rhythm from fellow Aussies AC/DC to Zeppelin and the Stones to more rootsy Americana à la the Allman Brothers and even the Black Crowes. Simplistic, decent and well-meaning lyrics like "Make peace your resolution tonight" pervade it. Sweet (as in aw). A tad bar-bandy and tired at times.
Powderfinger play the Guvernment Monday (March 15).
