PPP

Rating: NNNN

Formerly known as the Platinum Pied Pipers (now abbreviated to PPP for legal reason), Waajeed and Saadiq make the most of their new cast of collaborators – singer/songwriter Coultrain and vocalists Jamila Reagan and Karma Stewart- to help reconnect with the spirit-raising sound of Detroit that first got them up dancing.

It’s a uniformly uptempo set clearly intended as a party starter. There are echoes of Parliament/Funkadelic, classic Motown and even a bit of booty and some references to Derrick May-style techno minimalism in between all the handclapping, which may leave some griping about the throwback vibe, but it’s really all just part of a good time. Might be what people could use right about now.
