Prefuse 73

Rating: NNN

Scott Herren’s latest serving of galvanized breaks and macerated samples boasts a cool lineup of collaborators. Their presence has caused Herren to iron out his serrated, glitch-caked signature texture in an effort to place the guest verses in hard focus. But with the exception of Hide Ya Face, which finds opaque verbiage-slingers Ghostface and El-P rolling thicker than Mary-Kate and Ashley, and the ever-trusty Aesop’s contribution, the artists’ vocal spots are spare and lacklustre (Masta Killa and GZA’s middling verses are 60 seconds long, combined), leaving Prefuse’s straight instrumental matter – which was more potent on One Word Extinguisher – in a by-default starring role.
