Maybe the mixed reaction he got for his style-over-substance hiphop collab album Surrounded By Silence lit a fire under his ass. Who knows? But Scott Herren has returned to form and then upgraded it for his fourth album under the P73 moniker.
While the album art is a nod to his 2003 One Word Extinguisher, and Herren's manic style is still hard at work, the glitch-hop pioneer funnels the soulful atmosphere of his Savath & Savalas folk project into Preparations.
He's also made his rapid sample cutting more seamless and the arrangements more elaborate. On the gorgeous Class Of 73 Bells, he borrows vocals from Brooklyn post-psych band School of Seven Bells.
But the edge is still very much here. Prefuse can still drop it apocalyptic-style, as he proves on Prog Version Slowly Crushed.
