Since their post-Kyuss inception about 10 years ago, the Queens have always been elusive: just when you think you've figured them out, leader Josh Homme releases another record that'll leave you scratching your head and feeling like you're not in on the secret.
Listening to Vulgaris is listening to Homme taunt you with a mixed bag of spaced-out, dissonant bluesy alt-rock, like he's saying, "Don't bother, douchebag, cuz you'll never get the joke."
Maybe that effect stems from his band's delivery, the way they slide from fuzzy slacker jams to full-on rockers before veering off into the sex-rock parody of Make It Wit Chu, a sleepy-eyed tune on which the protagonist never pleads but simply states that he wants to fuck. And perhaps it's precisely Homme's nonchalance that makes Queens so appealing - you're never sure whether he gives a shit or is just in it for the free beer and access to chicks. Though QOTSA always seem to be on bland-rock stations, this is as different from the mainstream as you can imagine, and not in a bad way.
