Album reviews Music

R. Kelly & Jay Z.

Rating: NNN

The title’s apt. Kelly’s currently suing Jay for $75 mil for breach of contract after being kicked off their co-headlining tour a month ago due to an incident at their Madison Square Garden show. Inexplicably, the singer thought someone in the audience was flashing a gun at him and fled. Kelly claims that after he spent some time backstage crying, one of Jay’s entourage blasted his face with pepper spray. This disc is worth copping if only as a souvenir of urban music hilarity. Lyrically, they’re both so lazy that this party album (tightly but typically produced by those old jiggy battle axes the Trackmasters) strikes an adorably casual chord. Though probably phoned together, the shit sounds like they recorded it in their PJs in Jay’s basement on a Sunday afternoon.
