Numerous disappointing band reunions have shown that the odds are stacked against anything worthwhile being produced when even great groups return to the studio. While Radio Birdman's Zeno Beach is no catastrophic embarrassment, neither does it come close to reaching the high standard set by the Oz gods' classic punk rock 'n' roll debut, Radios Appear. It's more in keeping with 96's live-in-the-studio set, Ritualism, only the 10-year gap has given original members Rob Younger, Deniz Tek, Chris Masuak and Pip Hoyle a chance to come up with a few new tunes. They get off to a promising start with the walloping We've Come This Far, followed by the snarling indictment of You Just Make It Worse and the fist-shaking Remorseless. But from that point on, the aging Aussie attack unit quickly loses steam, and it's a slow descent into mediocrity that winds up with the throwaway surf nostalgia of the title track. Three for 13 is nothing to "yeah hup" about, but it could've been much worse.
