See, being multi-millionaire rock stars isn’t so bad after all! Having exorcised their stadium-rock angst on Kid A and Amnesiac, Radiohead get back to business with the strikingly straightforward Hail To The Thief. This record demonstrates that the electronic dabblings on the last two records were heading somewhere. It’s the most accomplished integration yet of Radiohead’s newly open-ended experimentation and their established ability to write massive rock songs like There There. The band is still pushing out, often drastically, and they remain the only band of their stature who would even consider a song like the loping, beautiful A Punchup At A Wedding. Here, though, that risk-taking arrives with a purpose.
