Rasputina hit the Mod Club tonight (Thursday, October 27). Rating: NNN
You've gotta hand it to Rasputina -- who're now pared down to two cellists and a boy on drums -- for sticking it out as the cello art rockers they are for as long as they have. They're true originals in an industry largely composed of wannabes and copycats. That's not to say they're easy to listen to, especially for 19 freakin' tracks of sparse strings and drumming alongside Melora Creager's dissonant little-girl vocals and constant chatter. This live recording from 2004 (the band's first release on their own label) has songs from every Rasputina album and covers of Heart's Barracuda and Led Zeppelin's Rock & Roll. A lot of thought has gone into their work over the years, and if you're a Rasputina fan you should really get this record. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure is art.
