Reckless Kelly

Rating: NNN

The alt country tag may be a bit of a stretch here, seeing as how Reckless Kelly owe a tip of the hat to the Eagles, .38 Special and Charlie Daniels more than to, say, Gram Parsons. That doesn’t take anything away from the songs, however, and brothers Willy and Cody Braun have a way with melody, unlike most in the alt country canon. This is no-nonsense straight-ahead country rock that hasn’t forgotten the importance of telling a good story. Yeah, we may know the story, but when did we stop wanting to hear about broken hearts, big bottles of booze and, well, more broken hearts? Add in stellar mandolin and violin and you’ll hardly notice that Reckless Kelly have forsaken the almighty pedal steel.
