Among lovers of bad music, the criteria for good bad music are eternally contentious. While the disastrous celebrity LP is a reliable favourite, sadly, Regis is no Bill Shatner. His voice is mediocre, but he doesn’t overextend it and frequently sings in key. Philbin’s brand of yuletide schlock doesn’t differ much from the non-celebrity kind, but it’s hard to shake the image of Dana Carvey’s SNL Regis parody, even as the real Philbin calmly intones over subdued hotel lobby jazz piano. Perhaps inessential music will become the new bad Philbin’s legacy depends on it.
