Ohio’s Relient K are one of those bands that make you go all “are these dudes a Christian pop band or just a pop band with Christian themes?” Hard to say, really, but since they’re probably both, it’s interesting that they’ve done so well with that finicky secular audience alongside the more faithful fans. Guess they’re doing something right. Mostly, though, the band is continuing to write sticky-sweet, radio-friendly pop punk that does very little to mask the fact that they’re basically just recycling the Jimmy Eat World formula. Even after losing points for originality, the band knows how to put an album’s worth of catchy ballads and rockers together, which makes Five Score an enjoyable guilty pleasure.
Relient K play the Opera House Wednesday (March 14).
