It's heartening to see a group elevate, and while Rhythmicru's last radar blip, Open Canvas, was dope, their new mixtape (or "mix-disc," as More Or Les philosophizes it should be called) is the clear sound of a game stepped up considerably. Whatever sticky-icky the Toronto 'cru were supertokin' on between records has expanded their minds, giving us more in-your-face lyrics over shorter cuts. (Punk-rock-style, each track is one to two minutes long.) Best, the wafting fumes of sonic hydro in the form of blazin' Beatnuts-style riddims has also attracted more posse members. Check for 2nd Thought's sad soul-injected Through My Senses, Uncledropsi's ragga-fried Dropzone and Mindbender's layered verse on the 70s-talk-show-end-credits-sounding beat of Magical Saxophones.
Rhythmicru launch their disc Saturday (March 4) at the Hooch.
