RICARDO VILLALOBOS

Rating: NNNN

Usually these Fabric discs are DJ mixes, but on this one Ricardo Villalobos stretches that definition by putting together a mix using only his own tracks, bringing it closer to an artist album than a compilation.

Minimal techno is in a strange place these days, split between the proudly nerdy old-school scene and the modern populist minimal that fills European clubs and that detractors prefer to call maximal. Villalobos falls somewhere in the middle. Though this disc is as difficult, weird and challenging as the most austere black-turtleneck-and-glasses set, it’s still without a doubt party music.

Villalobos is known to enjoy his late nights and debauchery, and this disc perfectly captures that 9 am chemical vibe. It’s trippy, fucked-up, occasionally funny and somehow as funky as it is disorienting.
