ROB CLUTTON BAND Holstein Dream Pageant (Snailbongbong) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
There are no tunes explicitly about cattle here, but much of Holstein Dream Pageant is as wide-open as a country field. There's an intriguing looseness to the jazz-based music Toronto bassist Clutton and his ensemble make, with each tune evolving as it grows. The opening track's electronic clicks develop into a languid bit of guitar-driven lounge rock; the standout tune, Moderato, begins with a probing bass solo before dropping into a percussion-laced melody that could be lifted from Don Cherry's Brown Rice album; and the disc closes with 12 minutes of improvised minimalism. The variety of sounds can be unsettling, but it's a fascinating journey. Clutton's band performs Sunday (January 26) at Artword Theatre.
