ROB DICKINSON

Rating: NNN

Fans of British shoegazers Catherine Wheel, who broke up in 2001, are probably pining for something new from the band, but they’re not going to get it from this double disc. Instead, frontman Rob Dickinson has put out six acoustic versions of some of the foursome’s biggest songs, along with a release of his 2005 solo effort Fresh Wine For The Horses. The reissued stuff isn’t too far removed from Catherine Wheel days – plenty of slow, distorted rockers mixed with passionate acoustic numbers – but the stripped-down versions of his hits is unnecessary. Without the fuzz and brood, the songs sound overwrought and cheesy.

Dickinson plays the Mod Club Wednesday (June 18).
